Tips for Protecting Your Home While on Vacation

BHHS Blog 5.18.16

A major concern for many homeowners and renters is how to protect their home while on vacation.  Of course, you don’t expect anything bad to happen, but it’s always best to be prepared.  Here we offer you some tips on how to keep your home secure when you’re not there.

  1. Install an alarm system.  This may not be feasible for everyone; however, it is something to consider and will offer peace of mind, not only while on vacation but whenever you’re not home. Consumer Affairs offers reviews for well-known home security brands.
  2. Keep watch.  Ask a trusted friend, relative or neighbor to check on your residence.  Ask them to check the mail and even enter the home on a regular basis to give the appearance that there is activity in the home.  You may even want to consider having them be a housesitter.
  3. Use electronic in-wall timers for lights.  Manual electronic timers are relatively inexpensive and are easy to install and set-up.  If you are concerned that someone will see the lights turning on and off at the same time each day, there are electronic timers that you can access from your smartphone.
  4. Lock everything.  This should go without saying, but be sure all windows, doors, garage doors, etc. are locked and secure.  Double-check everything before you leave.
  5. Hide valuables.  You may trust your housesitter, but you may not know or trust who they host while you’re out of town (if you allow them to have company).  Hide your valuables (jewelry, firearms, etc.) in a safe or secure space and don’t tell them where they are hidden.
  6. Be careful what you say.  Going on vacation is exciting and it’s tempting to announce that excitement on your social media pages, but don’t.  Although your page info may be private to those outside of your “friends,” you can’t be sure your friends won’t tell their friends.
